Server Stories: Silence

Silent. You can hear cricket noises. Faint pigeon noises. A car passes by in the distance... followed by a bus. The screaming of drunk men and the distant melody of faint music from down the block. Trees rustling quietly
quiet hums from the streetlamps. Birds singing in the trees. The dark light filling everywhere but for the one streetlamp outside the street. all noises mixing to create the melody you have become accustomed to throughout your life. Almost calming but with a constant eeriness. The sun is setting making the sky shades of pink, orange and blue. As the crimsons and tangerines of the sky fade into plums and deep azures you notice the figure down the street from you...
The figure has a sleek silhouette, you can almost hear their footsteps as they lightly make their way down the street, almost floating along with the pavement. The harsh breathing from said figure gave you the impression of a drunk man. They slightly swayed but never enough to make you less creeped out. You watched as each footstep seemed to grow louder and louder. Your own heartbeat rising above the sounds you called home. You became startled as the figure somehow made their way behind you, despite being in front of you literally seconds ago. Who was this and what did they want? You wondered. Feeling the warm breath behind your neck you ran and ran and ran. However, glancing behind you saw that they followed on. Seeming absorbed by the mere look of you... You ran into the park just beside that street. The distant bird chirps and calls and the rustling of night-time animals startling you. You had to stop to take a breath. You could feel the figure right behind you, almost towering behind you back. Your whole body shivered. You were exhausted. As you seen the silvery shine of an object you knew too well you stood paralysed. What could you do now? Was it too late? Maybe this late-night walk was a bad idea? What should you do?You decided to take a detour into the small alleyway by the corner shop. You knew that if you tried running into the park you would be too visible anyway. Maybe you could manage to blend in with the darkness in the alleyway. Who knows. It might just work... You had already imagined the outcome of that. The park was no place to hide. The rancid smell of vomit, lingering smells of alcohol and the crunch of shattered glass only felt worse. You did not know of there was a way out of this alleyway. Click... Click... Click. The noises had doubled, you could smell the soot from far off. Why was there the smell of soot. No. Where was your ph- You go to grab something to realise you are holding something else...You look down to see you were holding... a knife?!? Why was there a knife in your pocket?? Well at least you have something to protect yourself with.
You look forward. You were steps behind a person. Their deep brunette curls, baggy pants, soft red t-shirt. You recognised this person. They were you.
How could this be? Where exactly are you? You look behind yourself. The alleyway has turned into an endless dark maze dripping with rain running through the cracks. The park and corner shop you could see in your peripheral vision were gone. Could this be? Your mind? You go to touch the wall. The person you saw a second ago is gone. You were in front a mirror. You froze staring at yourself. A dream. A dream this must be, you thought. But as you look on... the image shifts, still yourself but moving. Closer and closer and closer. You were grabbed, feeling the scolding hot flesh of a hand drag you in, the pain of hitting a glass surface... not there...and... falling, the constant feeling of falling, the wind rushing by your ears, the dark pitch-black void. A dream, right? Why have you not woken up?You open your eyes. You have fallen into a pool of water, aiding your fall. Your mind still feels slightly hazy. The feeling of damp cloth and the weight of wet hair dragging you down. You pull up and up, begging to break the watered surface once more. A pool. You hear the loud hum-buzz of the lights above and around you. The freezing cold white tiles all around, random holes in the room, corridors that went on forever, random glass panels to viewing rooms with no chance to enter, the light baby blue tiles scattered about; bright blue green and yellow pipe work lined the walls and glancing up it seemed the same with no true roof above you. You can hear the whirring and beeping of machines in the other rooms. There's a vending machine in the corner of the room. You slowly and lightly make your way to it, making sure your footsteps are as much as barely touching the floor. You glance at the products behind the thin glass window. You can't seem to read any of the labels. Under the vending machine you spot a spark of light. You kneel to see it was a shiny, cheap looking golden key. Could this be the clue to what the hell is happening? This whole place reminded of your old school with distaste. Better get out of here as soon as possible. You peek outside to see a room filled with fans. It looks like your grandparent's creepy old dry room. You feel a shiver down your spine as you see the alcohol bottles on the ground. Could this be a mirage? You creep to the room, as if you were making sure to not be seen by anyone or anything. There's an old washing machine at the end of the room. You hear the crunch of something as you lay your foot down on the ground. A cigarette? When did that get here? You catch a whiff of a sweet cherry smell floating around in the room. Old retro music suddenly starts playing. Seems like this place is trying to mess with your mind... All these things seem nostalgic to me; however, I can't put a finger on exactly why. After all these things have almost nothing to do with me, so this can't be your mind. You walk through a doorway that seemed to lead to nowhere, it only taking you back to the alleyway, you turn around to go back but walk into the wall… why is this happening? I can’t be imagining this… or can I? No, it can't be, it’s a real ass wall. You see a man in the corner of your eye. He's standing against the wall, smoking a cigarette. The coat tails of his cloak fall behind him. His luscious black hair falls out of his baker boy hat. He seems to be extremely tall. You take a few steps back, cornering yourself at the other end of the alleyway. How can this be? He didn't shrink a single inch. The adrenaline runs through your body but before it takes grasp of your rationality you decide to test this by running towards the man. What is this? As you stand but 3 feet from this man, he looms over you his height never changes. He is the same height as when you stood at the other end of this alley way of mystery. Despite the several layers of clothing and the bad lighting, you could just tell this was a man of perfect shape. His blue eyes were glimmering with light. His slick, luscious black hair curled under his hat. Enough about him. You need to find a way out of this labyrinth of confusion. Maybe if you can get this man’s attention then he can help you, but he seems to be frozen in time. "Excuse me sir" you hollered. "I'm lost and I need to be found." As if by magic this man seemed to awake from his slumber. "Then found you are" he said in the most soothing voice you have only ever hear from your dearly departed mother. You feel pleasantly startled by his voice. It's quite possibly the most beautiful voice you have ever heard. You feel a hot flash over your face. He asks if you have caught a cold in the rain. You nod your head hesitantly, not wanting to fall into the arms of someone who wants nothing more than for you to fall to your demise… but he was different… you felt safe in his sight but different alone.A hand appears out of his cloak… too dark to see, you must decide to stay where you are or see what happens if you place your life in the hands of a complete stranger, after what seemed like forever you take it… instantly your surroundings change to a field, with a sharp end going down completely to the earth’s crust. However, you see the man, now in the light… where have I seen him before? You are in a field of sunflowers. The summer atmosphere is hazy with the sunlight shining strongly. You suddenly feel a strong feeling of nostalgia gushing over you. You have a strong feeling that you already have a strong bond with this man. How do you know this though? How long has this gorgeous guy been looming in my life without me noticing? He looked so much better in the sunlight… almost completely different… his amazing tan skin and curly hair- it almost seemed too… familiar? His hair reflecting the orange, yellow and pink skies… as eyes twinkling into the endless horizon. Who is this guy? A voice pierced your thoughts "Hey, are you alright there kiddo? you seem to have just went blank." You snapped out of your confusion. "Yeah, I’m alright. Hey, do we know each other?" in a playful tone he responded with "only if you can remember me."He smiled as you strained your mind to remember who he was. "You seem to be troubled", he laughed gently. One last time you asked "do we know each other? I can’t remember." then it dawned on me. Panic washed the curiosity and adrenaline away in an instant. You couldn't recall a single moment of my life; You knew nothing about who you are besides when you remembered your mother's open casket…
